Are Mental Illnesses Treatable?
This question was raised by many of my patients and initially I was quite surprised why would that even be a question. Then I realized how people who have been inflicted with mental illnesses would believe that the condition was a life sentence. Reason being mental illnesses are not like physical illnesses. For the latter, once healed, will have a low chance of recurrence unless the person’s immunity drops or gets injured or exposed to the triggers of the physical illness again. To many, mental illnesses have the pattern of recurrence. Even when there seems to be good days, the mental illnesses will emerge down the line when the person faces similar if not the same triggers. The mental illnesses seem more ingrained in the subconsciousness of a person.
So the question is then: are mental illnesses treatable?
Modern Western Medicines Suppress Mental Illnesses
The approach taken by Western Medicine is based on what mental illnesses manifest in the brain chemicals, such as for example insufficient serotonin in brain. So what the Western drugs do is to artificially give serotonin to the body.
But this is a form of suppression as over time, the body will not be used to producing serotonin on its own. Rather it relies on the external introduction of serotonin from chemical drugs.
Traditional Chinese Medicines has a different way of looking at Different forms of Mental Illnesses
Mental illnesses can display in the form of anxiety, depression, poor sleep, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and many others.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), mental illnesses are related more to the mind which is the Heart in TCM theory. This is very different from Western Medicine which look at mental illnesses as related to the brain.
TCM has effective ways to treat Different Forms of Mental Illnesses
TCM involves methods such as Acupuncture, Herbs and many other modalities that can help to treat mental illnesses.
These methods serve to balance the entire body system rather than to suppress the mental illnesses.
In my other posts, it is already shown that there are scientific proofs that regular sessions of Acupuncture can reduce the flare up of anxiety, regular sessions of Acupuncture will alleviate and heal Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), regular frequent sessions of Acupuncture will reduce and treat Depression and many other mental illnesses.
Moreover, recurrence of the mental illnesses when treated with Acupuncture is low because the body is balanced and healed from deep within.
