Ask Dr Xiang Jun: How Do I Heal Anxiety Without Drugs?
For anxiety, the first step is to rule out the possibility that your anxiety symptoms are being caused by a medical condition that is not psychiatric. Among the conditions that produce symptoms similar to those of anxiety are hyperthyroidism or other endocrinal problems, too much or too little calcium, low blood sugar and certain heart problems. Certain medicines also can sometimes cause anxiety.
If no other underlying medical conditions are causing the anxiety and you are still feeling the symptoms, then the diagnosis for an anxiety disorder is confirmed.
Under conventional medicines, the way drugs work for anxiety is through suppression.
The most prominent of anti-anxiety drugs for the purpose of immediate relief are those known as benzodiazepines; among them are alprazolam (Xanax), clonazepam (Klonopin), chlordiazepoxide (Librium), diazepam (Valium), and lorazepam (Ativan). But they have drawbacks: Benzodiazepines sometimes cause drowsiness, irritability, dizziness, memory and attention problems, and physical dependence.
There are natural methods like acupuncture, herbs, meditation, yoga that can help ease anxiety holistically without any side effects.
All natural methods for treating anxiety calm the nerves and ground the body. In scientific terms, it balances the hormones and chemical reactions in the body. When that occurs, anxiety is calmed as the body finds its own balance again naturally, rather than through artificial force or suppression with chemical drugs.
