Inner Practice: Net Worth

HNWI.

I came across this abbreviation the other day and it brings me to research on what the definition of Net Worth is exactly.

It says, “Net worth is the value of all the non-financial and financial assets owned by an individual or institution minus the value of all its outstanding liabilities. It is a quantitative concept that measures the value of an entity.”

Indeed, ever since the start of Industrial Revolution, we human beings have learnt to use numbers to quantify everything, to give everything a measurement.

Time, size, distance, speed, direction, weight, volume, temperature, pressure, force, sound, light, energy—these are among the physical properties for which humans have developed accurate measures, without which we could not live our normal daily lives. Measurement permeates every aspect of human life since then.

Right up to the point that we even measure the value of life through numbers, hence the term Net Worth is born.

But is this really what life is about? That the value of a person is measured by how much he or she owns in one lifetime, period?

We are so obsessed with things that we cannot see life anymore. We see things only. And we defined ourselves with things and possessions.

We measure our worth with numbers.

We celebrate and worship hoarding, not living.

Similarly as measuring the worthiness of life, we want to use numbers to measure wellness, health and effectiveness of healing arts like Acupuncture.

Apart from the fact of using unsuitable methodologies to quantify effectiveness, the numbers not only gave erroneous misleading results that reflect poorly on the treatments, but also limit the display of the actual capabilities and miracles that the treatments are capable of.

My take:
Do not use numbers to judge healings.  The effectiveness of healing arts goes way beyond what numbers and science can define.  How comfortable, well, happy and strong an individual can recover and outgrow– these are how we should measure the effectiveness.

Similarly, do not use numbers and physical possessions to quantify the net worth of a life. It is way too pathetic. Instead,

How kind and compassionate a person can be when everyone is unkind,

How generous a person can be when everyone else is holding back,

How forgiving a person can be even when the boundaries are crossed way too much,

How authentic a person can be when everything is a lie,

How loyal a person can be when relationships these days are transactional and superficial,

How selfless a person can be when everyone think only for themselves,

How beautiful the heart can be when the circumstances are hideous.

These are how we should measure the net worth of a life.

What say you?
