TCM Basics 101: Five Flavors of Traditional Chinese Medicine - Sweet
Sweet is the flavor of Earth. Just like the Earth element, the flavor Sweet nourishes the body through relaxation and grounding. The flavor of Sweet influences the Spleen, Stomach and Pancreas which are also the organs that absorb and distribute sugar and increase energy in the body.
Sweet is classified as yang in nature and it can warm and strengthen the body from deficiency or weakness. However, sweet foods are also yin in respect to moistening, increasing fluids in the tissues and relaxing the body. This flavor nourishes the Spleen system and the Qi of the body to increase the overall energy.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Spleen and Stomach are related to the emotion Worry and taking Sweet flavor foods more can help ease the uneasy feeling of Worry in the body and mind. This is the reason people who are facing worries, experiencing ungroundedness, insecurity tend to crave for sugars and sweets to counter such feelings and to feel more protected and safe.
Some of the examples of herbs that have the flavor of Sweet are licorice, astragalus, and jujube dates.
Some of the examples of foods that have the flavor of Sweet are whole grains and vegetables, such as cabbages, fruits, carrots, parsnips, chestnuts and sweet potatoes.
