Ask Dr Xiang Jun: Can Acupuncture Reduce the Risk of Headaches?

Yes definitely acupuncture can help reduce the risk of headaches.

To answer this question, we need to understand the root causes for headaches.

From a Western Medicine point of view, headaches can be a result from stress and tension. Headaches can also arise from sinus problems. Headaches can also be as a result of external factors such as hot weather. Headaches can arise from caffeine. Headaches can also come from neck and shoulder tension and misalignments of cervical spinal joints.

Hence after having to identify the cause for the headache, acupuncture can then treat accordingly, tackling the main reason for the headache. But on a general note, acupuncture can ease the tension in muscles, have natural antiinflammatory effects, detoxification effects, cooling effects, improve circulation effects which will help to ease the headaches to a large degree. Having to identify the root cause for the headaches will let the acupuncture session be a highly targetted one on top of the general benefits. From a Traditional Chinese Medicine point of view, headaches can be from internal imbalances or external factors. For internal imbalances, it can come from any organs, but the most closely related ones are Liver and Gallbladder. For external factors, it can be anything from Heat to Dampness and Wind.

Hence with acupuncture, depending on how the practitioner is trained and his or her techniques, it can help to rebalance the organs or clear the external factors that cause the headaches.
