Women's Health Series: Menopause and Adrenal Fatigue

The adrenal glands are the body’s primary “shock absorbers” and they sit on top of the kidneys. They are designed to produce hormones that allow us to respond to the conditions of the daily life in healthy and flexible way, with energy, enthusiasm and efficiency.

But if the intensity and frequency of the stresses in our life, from either inside yourself or outside yourself become too great, then over time the adrenal glands will begin to become exhausted, also known as adrenal fatigue.

And when the adrenal glands are depleted, the other related hormone producing sites such as the thyroid and ovaries will not be functioning optimally as well. That is when you will experience fatigue and menopausal symptoms. These symptoms are attempts to get you to pay attention and change some aspects of your life.

It is therefore important to know what stressors can over time lead to the depletion of adrenal glands and result in the triad of ovarian, thyroid and adrenal dysfunction. Here is the list of stressors:

Unresolved emotional stress:

-          Worry

-          Anger

-          Guilt

-          Anxiety

-          Fear

-          Depression

-          Lack of pleasurable experiences
